My character is simply “The Librarian.” For some set up, I was really inspired by the new Tomb Raider reboot. The original character seemed cool on paper, but this new character added more depth and emotion, leaving a more resonant impact on the action genre. So I wanted to create a bad ass, kind of sexy, action hero template and give it some depth and pathos.

When my character was a child, she fled to the ruins of one of UW Madison’s main libraries after the murder of her parents, who were teaching citizens how to read and trying to encourage education. To escape the pain of life she blocked out the memories of her own life, even her own name and replaced them with the stories in books. In other words, she escaped the pain of life and the memories of the past with the lives, memories, and worlds of books. She read about the make believe worlds. She had tea with Elizabeth Bennet, solved mysteries with Sherlock Holmes, and spent a few days in New York city with Holden Caulfield over and over. She also read about the world that was, the soaring skyscrapers of the cities, the deepest bluest seas of the ocean, and of green jungles as wild as her imagination could allow them. She also read about how to survive, she read wilderness guides, books on mechanics, even books on how to build relationships with people, though she could never quite master that one. She managed to fend off contact with others, because the few people left in the area surrounding the library, believed it was haunted, or poisoned by the fallout. But she managed to set traps that she learned to make from her books, those usually kept people out. traps yielded many things, such as guns, knives, and ammo. One day, she found two dual pistols and a rifle from some poor soul in one of the traps. She researched and studied every guide she had on firearms and eventually became a firearms expert. Now, instead of just simple traps, she would use the rifle for catching rats for food and the pistols for trespassers.
She holds very little to the value of human life, as all she would ever need was her books. She believed this all throughout her teenage years. Then one day she ventured out to collect supplies, as she would pose as a regular denizen on the outskirts to trade rat pelts for supplies. On this day she found herself resting alone in an alley when suddenlt a group of children burst in fighting. Three boys were about to mercilessly beat a little girl until she stepped in, causing them to flee. The little girl explained that she had no friends and was orphaned, only trying to survive the coming winter. To console the child, The Librarian made sure they were alone and hidden in the alley and pulled out a weathered copy of Huckleberry Finn, so she could read to her. Seeing the wonder on the girl’s face she read the girl her first book, memories of her own parents reading to her came flooding back. Their love for teaching others and sharing books suddenly became clear to her. She decided she would take the call as well. She would find a way to teach other to read. She would find a way to give books to others so that they may enrich and improve their lives. She would bring knowledge and literature back to Wisconsin. She would become The Librarian. The girl, whose name was Sonia, she brought back with her to the library, teaching her how to read, write, and survive; raising her as her own. Into adulthood she managed to discover the “Lorekeepers,” and become their bounty hunter and envoy, exploring and raiding lost libraries and book stores to build a collection of books that she could trade underground. She even managed to find others who could still read, building an underground classroom system teaching others about the world that was and could be. Now in her mid thirties she searches the wasteland of Wisconsin for books, contacts, and missions, while her daughter guards their library home.
A bit of an easier summary now. So my character is essentially a bounty hunter of books. She’s in her late thirties with brunette hair she puts in different kinds of braids (as she has a strange habit of braiding her hair as she reads.) She is about 5 foot 10, tall, in decent shape from her raiding but a bit on the thick side due to her age. She only carries dual pistols with the occasional knife or bow and arrow. She wears a steam powered gauntlet as she is not a skilled fighter or acrobat. What she lacks in physicality she makes up for in intelligence and being a quick learner. She is extremely adaptable and quick witted. Although she is a bit of a loner, and not too friendly of good with others, she manages to build relationships with others involved in the cause. She hates Crawly and any form of government, believing that schooling is the only way to truly save and sustain society. She is often cold and calculating, but is resourceful imaginative with a soft spot for those who have the desire to learn and fight to survive like she did, which is what endeared her to Sonia. In this way she is Chaotic Neutral to put it in D and D terms. In other words her “career is Library Raider/ Rebellion member,” is fortitude for her survival skills and know-how and her vice is wrath as she is unfeeling to most people, only caring about those who show they want to thrive, learn, and survive, instead of just wallowing in their pathetic existences. As stated she is a skilled gunsmith and marksman, with quick witted survival skills (craft= setting traps) and even minimal computer skill from using and tinkering with library comp. lab. She carries two heavy dual pistols (her weapons of choice, as well as a survival kit, gunsmithing kit, and a first aid kit.
